Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that typically takes place over the course of two separate appointments with our team. First, we will remove all plaque and tartar accumulation from the surface of the teeth as far down as the pockets will allow. Before we do this, we’ll numb the area being treated to make sure you don’t experience any discomfort.
The second part of this procedure is root planing, which involves the removal of hardened bacteria deposits from the roots of the teeth. This will allow your gums to healthily reattach to the teeth to protect the vulnerable roots.
Laser Periodontal Treatment

During scaling and root planing, we may utilize our dental laser to help kill harmful oral bacteria as well as remove severely infected gum tissue. The laser eliminates the need for a scalpel and sutures by vaporizing soft tissue and cauterizing the area on contact, minimizing discomfort, bleeding, post-operative risk of infection, and even shortening healing time.
Antibiotic Treatment

In combination with scaling and root planing, we may also suggest antibiotic treatment to help control the accumulation of harmful oral bacteria, control symptoms of gum disease, and prevent the infection from progressing. This will involve taking prescribed antibiotics for the amount of time instructed by our team. It’s crucial to finish the cycle of antibiotics completely to prevent antibiotic-resistant bacteria from developing.
